Preveli International Memorial for Resistance and Peace

Street view

The creation of the memorial was conceived by the veterans of the Allied Forces of the Greek soldiers who benefitted from the hospitality and care of the monks of the Holy Monastery of Preveli during the occupation of Crete by the forces of Nazi Germany. The memorial was designed by the architect Chrysi Stavrianoudaki and was placed on a plateau on the provincial road leading to the Monastery of Preveli, 1.8 km away from it. In addition to the historical and aesthetic value of the memorial, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy views of the Libyan Sea, which stretches across the horizon behind the memorial. The composition consists of a headstone with the flags of the four Allied countries honoured (Greece, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand), flanked by two life-size brass statues, one of which depicts the armed Hegumen of the Monastery in 1941, Agathangelos Lagouvardos, and the other an anonymous soldier of the Allied Forces.
