German Artillery Bunker

Due to its strategic position which allows for the control of the southeastern coast of Crete and the sea traffic in the South Cretan Sea, Ierapetra was systematically fortified by the German conquerors. An attack of the Allies by sea from Africa to the south of the island was always a possibility, so the German fortifications in Ierapetra were not negligible. Walking through the streets of the city today, visitors can see many remnants of that era, since the Germans did not manage to blow them all up during their hasty withdrawal after their capitulation, so that they would not fall into the hands of the Allies. One of these World War II ruins is the German artillery bunker, which is located in a place that could have once controlled vehicle traffic and that nowadays adorns a flowerbed in Mikrasiaton Square.
