German Fortification Ruins

Street view

On the hill of the Fort in Rafina, 60 metres above sea level and in the middle of forest vegetation, visitors can spot the ruins of fortifications built in 1941 by the German occupation forces. Open gun emplacements, warehouses, tanks and military accommodation had been set up on the hill, and trenches and underground galleries had been dug. Most of the fortification works were destroyed during the German withdrawal from Greece in 1944; the Germans blew them up to prevent them from falling into the hands of the Allies. Although most of the fortifications have been dismantled, parts of the moats, outposts and underground installations can still be seen today. Recognising the importance of this location, not only because it offers primary information on the creation of fortifications and war installations during World War II, but also because it is a hill of historical memory, the Municipality of Rafina is making efforts to exploit and promote it.
