Machine Gun Bunker of Charakas Beach

Street view

At Charakas beach, in the area of Keratea, visitors can spot three German machine guns, remnants of World War II. The installation of machine gun bunkers on the south-eastern coast of Attica was intended both to prevent the escape of prisoners or Allied soldiers by sea, and to deter the Allied forces from disembarking there. These machine gun bunkers are quite worn out from the passage of time and the corrosion caused by the waves’ water and salt. Their construction does not differ from the typical German bunkers. They consist of a circular-shaped wall with a flat roof and two holes, which face the sea and cover a wide enough firing arc to allow for the unobstructed control of sea traffic and to be able to fire easily against the enemy.
