Memorial for the Fallen of Alikianos

On May 24th and June 2nd, 1941, the Supreme Commander of the German Parachute Corps, Kurt Student, and on August 1st, 1941, his successor Alexander Andrae, ordered mass executions of the inhabitants of Alikianos, because of their participation in the Battle of Crete and their active resistance. Today, in the courtyard of the Holy Church of Timios Stavros, there is a monument dedicated to the sacrifice of the hundreds of victims of Nazi violence. The names of the fallen are engraved on the monument and one side is decorated with a brass relief that depicts the proud figure of a Cretan woman; the statue of an eagle is placed on the top of the composition, swooping towards the ground. The touching poem signed by G.D.K. refers to the immortality of the heroic Cretans.
