Memorial for the Fallen Members of the Skoulas Family

On the provincial road that passes through the village of Arkadi, visitors can see a simple but elegant memorial dedicated to the fallen members of the historic Skoulas family. It is composed of three vertical marble columns, whose upper end is evocative of the Minoan horns of consecration. The middle column, which is topped by a brass wreath as a symbol of glory, bears 31 names of members of the Skoulas family, who fell for their country in armed conflicts during the period spanning from the Greek War of Independence to the German Occupation. The left column bears the phrase “The whole earth is the sepulchre of famous men” in Greek, which Thucydides preserved in Pericles's Funeral Oration, and the right column bears the poem “Thermopylae” by Constantine Cavafy.
