This funerary monument is dedicated to the 44 fallen residents of the village of Milopotamos. The heroic citizens of Milopotamos rushed to Latzimas, where two companies of German Nazis had landed in their effort to occupy Crete by air. A group of 500 fighters gathered in the village, mostly poorly equipped civilians with few weapons, walking sticks, rods and agricultural tools. The uneven yet fierce Battle of Latzimas followed, which lasted until May 28th, 1941 and costed 44 freedom fighters their lives; they fell alongside 8 Officers and Cadet Gendarmes. The monument has a expanding, pyramid-shaped structure with a flame at the top. The composition is completed by small iron structures, which symbolise the forces of the German paratroopers that invaded the island.
