In the heart of the city of Heraklion, in the centre of Georgiadis Park, stands the Monument for the Battle of Crete, in honour of the Greek soldiers and the British, Australian and New Zealand Allies who gave their lives fighting in the Battle of Crete in May 1941. In the centre of the composition is Greece, depicted as an antiquely dressed female figure, engraving the dedicatory inscription with a hammer and chisel, while above her the winged goddess Nike (Victory) is depicted rushing and brandishing a sword. Behind the central composition, in a horizontal line, there are brass reliefs with representations of the Battle of Crete, which are topped by the flags of Greece and the allied countries. Finally, in front of the steps leading to the monument are two Italian machine guns: loot that fell into the hands of the British Allies.
