Pan-municipal Memorial and Museum of the Viannos Holocaust

Street view

In retaliation for the activities of the Cretan resistance, Wehrmacht General Friedrich- Wilhelm Muller ordered mass executions and the destruction of villages in Viannos and Ierapetra. Between the 14th and the 16th of September 1943, the Germans took the lives of about 500 people and burned and looted 20 villages. This memorial was created in memory of these atrocities. The centre is dominated by a column surmounted by the figure of a fighter bent at the feet of a winged Nike (Victory). The composition is completed by 11 columns depicting human figures, some raising their fists as a sign of resistance, which bear the names of those executed. In the adjacent Holocaust Museum, visitors can see symbolic representations of the resistance and sacrifice of the brave Cretans during the German Occupation.
