At the strategically significant point of the hill of Drapanokefala, at Kokkino Chorio, the German occupation forces created a series of fortifications, which had an excellent view of the bay of Souda and could control sea traffic. To build the fortifications, the inhabitants of the surrounding areas were forced to work under horrible conditions. Of the various ruins that still remind us of the violence of World War II, the most easily accessible is the bunker near the Holy Church of Agios Georgios. Visitors can observe the layout of the spaces in the excavated natural rock and read the memorial column next to the entrance, which is inscribed with the names of the victims of the War and the Occupation and refers to the facilities of Drapanokefala as the “War Machine of the Conqueror”.
