Tradition has it that the monastery exists since the 13th century, while its dedication to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary dates back to the 16th century. During the national struggles that followed, the monastery was involved and became a meeting point for the leaders of the revolutionary movements many times. As a result, it was sacked in 1823 by the Turkish-Egyptian troops. During the Revolt of 1866, the Monastery was the headquarters of the Revolutionary Committee of the Eastern Provinces. In 1867, when the Battle of Lasithi was raging, the ammunition found in the monastery was enough to bring about a new round of Ottoman retaliation and cause its destruction once more. In later years, the monastery again experienced historic moments, as it hosted resistance fighters and organised attacks against the German invaders.
