Hellenic-Australian Battle of Crete Memorial

In Rethymno, on the central street of Igoumenou Gavriil, opposite number 32, is the Hellenic-Australian Memorial Park, which hosts the Greek-Australian World War II Memorial. It is a tribute to the 10000-11500 Greek soldiers and the 6500 Australian Allies who fought with outstanding courage against the Axis forces that invaded Crete. The simple memorial, consisting mainly of stone and a granite column in the middle of the composition, bears a bilingual inscription in Greek and English with the text “Hellenic-Australian Memorial” and “In Remembrance of 1941” written in both languages. The composition is surrounded by the flags of Greece and Australia, as well as signs informing visitors about the historical events that took place during World War II.
