The Greek-New Zealand Memorial for the Battle of Galatas is dedicated to the dead Greek and New Zealand Allies who fell while fighting in the Battle of Crete, in the area of Galatas. The battle was fierce and lasted for ten whole days, during which the local population, together with the allied Greek and New Zealand forces, tried to repel the Germans with few weapons and agricultural tools. In the centre of the memorial stands a tall column with a bronze representation of Crete crowned with a laurel wreath; on either side, the two smaller columns bear inscriptions referring to the events of the Battle and the number of the dead.
