Monastery of Agios Georgios of Charodia

Agios Georgios of Charodia is a small monastic complex which was created during the late Venetian rule in Crete. Nowadays, a small, partially renovated, single-space, arched-roofed church survives, as well as smaller ruined buildings, which served as monastic cells or storage and other auxiliary spaces. According to tradition, the monks of Agios Georgios operated one of the first fully functional oil mills in the region. Today, the jurisdiction of Agios Georgios includes four smaller holy churches: Profitis Ilias of the Kallergis family, Agia Aikaterini, Agios Antonios and Agioi Deka Martires. On November 3rd, the day on which the retrieval of the saint's relics is celebrated, new wines were traditionally opened, tasted and blessed; thus, the nickname “Methystis” has prevailed for Saint George of Charodia, which translates to “he who makes people drunk”.
