The Allied Military Cemetery is located in the Vlites area of Souda, Kidonia. The soldiers buried here died during World War II, mostly during the Battle of Crete in May 1941. However, there are also 19 dead from World War I and 37 dead from the post-war period. The graves are divided by country; most of the dead came from Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. In total, the cemetery is home to 1,527 graves, which are maintained through the efforts of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. It is worth noting that about half of the graves contain unidentified dead soldiers.
