Next to the entrance of the Firkas Fortress is the Maritime Museum of Crete. Thanks to its rich collections, the Museum preserves the maritime culture and the seafaring tradition of the Greeks, and especially of the Cretans. The Founder of the Museum, Vice Admiral of the Navy Ar. Giannopoulos laid the foundations for the development of a prestigious cultural institution, while the successors of his work made sure to evolve it into one of the best maritime museums in Europe. The Museum is thematically divided into various sections, which span the entire Greek history from antiquity to the present day, and present a variety of relics, from model ships and authentic maritime objects to original works of art, maps and stamps.
