Just outside the village of Maleme, there is a memorial dedicated to the memory of the airmen of the 30th and 33rd Squadrons of the Royal Air Force who fell during the Battle of Crete in the area of Maleme, on the 20th and 21st of May 1941. Three plaques have been placed on a stone arched structure, engraved with an inscription on the heroic sacrifice of the British airmen, as well as their names, under the insignia of their squadron. A fourth plaque mentions the donation of Eleftherios and Jose Tsiknakis.
