German Artillery Bunker of Tavronitis River

During the Battle of Crete, the area around the Bridge of river Tavronitis was the scene of fierce conflict. This is due to the strategic importance of the bridge, not only because it connects the important areas of Chania and Kidonia with the districts of Kissamos and Selino, but also because it provides access to the airport of Maleme. Therefore, after repelling the Greeks and the foreign allies, the German conquerors created a small artillery bunker next to the bridge. It is essentially a vertical trench, below street level, which leads to a narrow chamber after descending some metal steps. The remains in the concrete suggest that there must have been a tower above ground level through which the gunner could shoot towards the side of the bridge, thus perfectly controlling the traffic.
