Memorial to the Executed Civilians

On June 2nd, 1941, the German Army executed a large number of civilians in Kondomari, in retaliation for the participation of the inhabitants of the village in the Battle of Crete and their active resistance. The main part of the memorial depicts in relief the moment of the capture and gathering of the victims, shortly before their execution. In front of the artistic composition there is a tomb with a statue of an open book, on which is inscribed in Greek: “Here, we honour the hearts whose forms have risen, immortal brave souls in their breast, the hearts of a lion”. Alongside are some of the violent scenes that war correspondent Franz Peter Weixler captured with his camera.
