Georgios Karaiskakis

The statue of Georgios Karaiskakis now adorns the port of Piraeus, following a proposal by the Municipality of Piraeus to the creator to place her work there. The unveiling of the work took place on March 27th, 1966. Loukia Georganti, daughter of the great sculptor Nikolaos Georgantis, created the statue of Karaiskakis based on an earlier work by her father. Georgios Karaiskakis (1780/1782-1827) was one of the most important leading figures of the Greek War of Independence. A Klepht, an Armatolos, and leading General of the War of Independence of 1821. The hero is depicted on horseback, wearing his traditional costume, with his horse at a gallop, as if thrown into battle, and with his realistically sculpted muscles drawing the viewer's attention.
