War Cemetery for the Forces of the Commonwealth

Street view

The Phaleron-Alimos War Cemetery for the Forces of the Commonwealth is one of the most imposing and impressive cemeteries in the country. It is under the care of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, as the location is home to some 2,050 soldiers of the British Commonwealth who died during various conflicts that took place on Greek soil, mainly during World War II. The cemetery is divided into sections based on the nationality of the fallen: British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, South African and Indian. Most of the tombs are engraved with the soldiers' details, such as their name, rank, the emblem of their unit and the symbol of their faith. The phrase that adorns the approximately 600 graves in which unidentified soldiers are buried is touching. Instead of their name, the phrase “Known unto God” has been written. In addition, there are marble monuments inside the cemetery, such as the monument of Athens, the Cross of Sacrifice, the Cremation Monument for the 74 Indian soldiers who, according to their faith, had to be incinerated, as well as others, mostly sculpted by the architect Louis de Soissons.
