The famous French sculptor Antoine Bourdelle created this statue in 1914. It is an exact replica of the plaster cast in the Bourdelle Museum in Paris. It was purchased in 2004 by the Alexander S. Onassis Foundation as part of an exhibition held at the National Gallery, and since 2010 it has adorned the Onassis Cultural Centre on Siggrou Avenue. The “Dying Centaur” is a brass statue depicting a centaur in his last moments between life and death, just before finally collapsing. Centaurs, who were human from the waist up and horses from the waist down, are creatures of ancient Greek mythology that often appear as symbols of the “lower” instincts and the warlike urges of man.
