Adamantios Korais

The statue was created at the expense of the Chian Committee and the unveiling took place in March 1834. The statue was created by the Athenian sculpture professor of the Technical University Georgios Vroutos and his teacher, the Peloponnesian Ioannis Kossos, one of the most distinguished sculptors of the time and a pupil of the German classicist sculptor Christian Siegel. After the death of Kossos, Vroutos took over his workshop. Adamantios Korais (1748-1833), who born on the island of Chios, a physician and scholar, was one of the most important representatives of the Modern Greek Enlightenment and an intellectual leader of the Greek War of Independence. He is depicted seating. His right hand rests on his knee and his left hand is holding a scroll. His head is turned to the right, bended low, his gaze meeting that of the observer as they admire the work of art, walking up the steps of the University.
