Pericles

In 1971, the German sculptor Heinrich Faltermeier completed this life-sized marble statue; it was donated to the Municipality of Athens by the shipowner Ioannis Theodorakopoulos. It was originally placed in the Municipality's Cultural Centre, but since 2002 it has been relocated in the courtyard of the City Hall. The statue depicts Pericles (495/494-429 BC), the greatest statesman of Greek classical antiquity according to many, standing upright, wearing a helmet and dressed in typical ancient Greek costume and holding a rolled scroll in his right hand.
