Alexander the Great

Street view

The sculptor Giannis Pappas began the study for the creation of the statue in 1941, during the German Occupation. The artist had fought in World War II and saw his work as a form of resistance and protest, as a need to emphasise the global reach of Hellenism, which suffered under the Nazi regime of violence and terror. The statue was unveiled in its current location in 2019 and depicts the figure of Alexander the Great (356-323 BC), the legendary King of Macedonia, whose vast Empire reached as far as India and united many different peoples and cultures, leaving an indelible mark on world history. It is interesting that the sculptor chose to depict the figure of the brilliant campaigner and conqueror not as a mature man, but as a teenager.
