The sculptor Georgios Vitalis from Tinos created the statue in 1868, and it was placed in its current location in 2002. The statue depicts Theseus, the mythical King of Athens and one of the most beloved heroes of Greek mythology, whose most well- known feat is his triumph over the Minotaur in the labyrinth of the Cretan King Minos, with the help of Princess Ariadne. The figure of a naked Theseus is depicted seated, wearing only his helmet and sandals and gazing contemplatively, with his head turned to the left, towards the Acropolis.
