An important political figure in the modern political history of Greece, Alexandros Panagoulis (1939-1976) was known mainly for his anti-dictatorial activity during the period of the Military Dictatorship (1967-1974), as well as for his attempt to assassinate the dictator Prime Minister Georgios Papadopoulos. His arrest, trial by military judges and torture by the regime followed. After the political transition, Panagoulis became an active politician and was elected as a Member of Parliament with the Centre Union and New Forces (EKND) party. On May Day 1976, he was killed in a car accident; whether it was indeed an accident or not is disputed. The full- length brass statue of Panagoulis, depicts the young man walking vigorously forward, in the military clothes he wore at the Military Court.
