Armenian Khachkar

The khachkar, also known as khatchkar or Armenian cross-stone, is a carved, memorial stone stele bearing a cross and often accompanying motifs such as rosettes and floral motifs. It is a typical item of medieval Armenian art and is included in the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. In 1996, on the initiative of the Armenian Red Cross, a similar stone stele of earthy colour was placed in Naiadon Park, on Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue, in the centre of Athens. This was a sign of gratitude for Greece's assistance and solidarity with Armenia during the first Nagorno-Karabakh War. At the base of the khachkar is an inscription of thanksgiving in Greek, while the monument is accompanied by another similar inscription in English.
