Athena Promachos

Street view

In the 1880s, in the context of the construction of the Academy of Athens, which is one of the three monumental buildings of the Athenian Trilogy, sculptor Leonidas Drosis from Nafplio undertook the decoration of the building and its outdoor spaces. “Athena Promachos” is on of his creations. The statue depicts the ancient patroness of the city of Athens, the goddess Athena, guardian goddess of wisdom, strategy and the art of warfare. The marble sculpture stands on a Ionic column about 10 metres high, to the left of the Academy's prostyle and depicts a larger than life-size Athena Promachos, more than 4 metres high, the goddess who fights in the front line of battle. The divine figure wears full battle gear, and is armed with a spear and a brass shield.
