Athens War Museum Branch

The Greek state, wishing to honour all those who fought for the freedom of our country, decided to found a War Museum in 1964. The Museum was inaugurated in July 1975 and is still in operation today. Its mission is to collect, preserve and exhibit war relics, as well as study, document and promote the struggles of the Greek nation from antiquity until today, aiming to stimulate national memory and promote the historical continuity and unity of Hellenism. The original core of the museum exhibits consisted of part of the objects of the great exhibition on the War History of the Greeks that had been held at Zappeion in 1968, as well as the priceless collection of Petros Saroglou, which consisted of thousands of rare weapons and armament parts of various historical periods. Over the following years, the War Museum proceeded to purchase from individuals and various institutions numerous works of art, archives or relics related to the subject matter of its exhibition spaces. Today, the Museum's permanent exhibition consists of thousands of relics and traces Greek military history in a linear fashion, from the earliest antiquity to modern times.
