Burial Monument of Alexandros Ypsilantis

It is a burial monument dedicated to the memory of Alexandros Ypsilantis (1792-1828), leader of “Filiki Eteria” (the Society of Friends) during the 1821 Revolution in Moldova. The monument dates back to 1869 and is attributed to the Peloponnesian sculptor Leonidas Drosis. In this sculpture, the body of Ypsilantis is depicted lying on a bed, on a sarcophagus, on which laurel wreaths are engraved along with the coat of arms of the Ypsilantis family and the symbol of the Sacred Band. The epigraph is engraved on the back of the monument: “Alexandros Ypsilantis, General Commissioner of the Beginning of Filiki Eteria”. Initially, the work of art was placed at the Technical University of Athens; however, it was moved to its current location in 1964, in front of the Holy Church of Taxiarches in Pedion tou Areos, near the cenotaphs of the Ierolochites and the fallen of the battle of Domokos during the Greek-Turkish War of 1897. At the same time, along with the transfer of the monument, the remains of Ypsilantis were retrieved from Austria and deposited in the monument.
