Charilaos Trikoupis

The marble statue of Charilaos Trikoupis, one of the most important political men of the second half of the 19th century in Greece, who served seven times as Prime Minister and who introduced the idea of modernisation and Europeanisation of the country, was originally placed in 1920 outside the Old Parliament building, today's National Historical Museum. Later, in 1954, it was moved to the left side of the building, towards Kolokotroni Str. Apart from the stately figure of the statesman standing in an upright position, the monument also includes an angel, a symbol of Fame and Glory. The angel's right hand, with which he is holding a writing instrument, is placed on his legs, while his left hand is holding a laurel branch. Below Trikoupis' left hand is his famous phrase: “Greece wants to prosper, and will prosper”.
