EOKA Heroes Monument

The National Organisation of Cypriot Fighters (EOKA) was a Greek-Cypriot organisation which aimed at throwing off the British rule in Cyprus during the years 1955-1959, pursuing the political self-determination of the island and the union with Greece. The history of EOKA has been marked by its rigorous action both at the political and diplomatic level, and in the field of sabotage against the British. The daring operations and dramatic executions of EOKA members moved the public and played a key role in the course of the Cyprus Question. The monument is an abstract composition that depicts human figures, female or male, with strong geometric shapes, intertwined, symbolising how the fighters were joined together in soul. At the same time, the figures form together a human hand, with each person being a finger, while the centre of the palm is open, like “a window of optimism”, according to the artist. At the bottom of the sculpture is the name of the sculptor and the date of creation. On the marble pedestal, the title of the creation and a reference to its unveiling by the President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias and the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades on April 4th, 2014, is engraved.
