The creator of the work of art, Phocion Roque, born in Argostoli, Kefalonia, was a great sculptor, cartoonist and writer. François-René de Chateaubriand (1768-1842) was a French writer and politician. He is considered a key representative of French Romanticism. He was a philhellene and, in 1825, he published in Paris the “Memorandum about Greece”, a manifesto in which he defended and legitimised the Greeks’ struggle for independence. The following phrase is written on the front of the pedestal on which the bust of the philhellene is placed: “Hellas: This name that no one can pronounce without respect and without emotion. Satovriandos”. The name “Satovriados” is of course the Greek version of “Chateaubriand”.
