At 6 Merlin Str. in Athens, visitors encounter the building in which the headquarters of the Gestapo, the Secret State Police of Nazi Germany, operated during the German Occupation. Today, at the entrance of the building stands the monument created by Thanasis Apartis in memory of those who suffered, were tortured, imprisoned and executed inside the police premises. It is a vertical brass plaque, on which a naked man is embossed, arms tied behind his back and a noose around his neck. To the right of the work of art, an inscription in Greek reads: “This used to be the Gestapo Hellhole, 1941-1944”. The composition is complemented by a metal sculpture, whose shape is reminiscent of prison bars.
