In 1998, the sculptor Mary Papakonstantinou from Chios created the sculptural complex “To the Greek Woman”, which has been installed at the junction of Vasilissis Sophias Avenue and Zacharof Str. in Athens since 1999. The work of art was created after a donation of the Soroptimist Club of East Athens to the municipality of Athens. The project was carried out in honour of Greek women. The two-metre-high brass composition rests on a base of tuff and consists of three female figures, joined together on their backs. The figures depict the archetypes of the mother with an infant in her arms, the intellectual with a book in her hand, and the fighter holding with a banner. The monument honours the significant and timeless contribution of women to Greek society and its struggles.
