Hellas crowning Lord Byron

Street view

The work was sponsored by Dimitrios Stefanovic Skylitsis (1839-1893), but due to disagreements about its placement, it was donated to the Greek State by his brother after his death. George Gordon Byron (1788-1824) was a British poet, one of the most important representatives of Romanticism and perhaps the most famous Philhellene of all time. Many of his poems were about Greece and its fight for freedom. The artistic composition depicts Greece (Hellas) as a barefoot, half-naked woman crowning the young man, Byron, while he turns his gaze to look at her. The circular pedestal bears the inscription: «Invenit Chapu Sculpsita. Falguiere», i.e. “created by the sculptors Chapu and Falguiere”, with the title underneath: “Hellas To Byron” and the dedication on the pedestal: “For the benefit of the country by Dimitrios Stefanovic Skylitsis”.
