The brass statue of Jose Artigas, created in 1950 by Uruguayan artist Juan Manuel Blanes, is made of brass and is three metres high. It was placed at the junction of Michalakopoulou and Chatzigianni Mexi streets in 2000, following a donation from the Ministry of Education and Culture of Uruguay to the Municipality of Athens. The Greek community of Montevideo also contributed to this initiative. Jose Artigas is the national hero of Uruguay, now recognised and honoured as its liberator from Spanish rule. Jose Artigas is depicted with his left hand resting on the hilt of his sword and his right hand holding his hat. Artigas is portrayed more as a leader of the people than as a magnificent military and political leader.
