In 1965, following a donation from the Embassy of Argentina to the Municipality of Athens, the brass bust of José de San Martín (1778-1850) was solemnly placed in Argentinis Dimokratias Square, on Alexandras Avenue. He is an iconic personality who is honoured as a national hero of the Latin American country, as well as a liberator of neighbouring Chile and Peru from Spanish rule. Sculpted by the Argentinian Jose Fioravanti who excelled in monumental sculpture, the work depicts San Martín in formal military dress. It is placed on a stepped marble pedestal 3 metres high and is inscribed with the name and title of San Martín, as well as the name of the artist.
