In the area of Kaisariani in Athens, there is the shooting range of the same name where hundreds of Greek resistance fighters were executed during the German Occupation. The first execution took place on May 26th, 1942, due to the sabotage of German installations, while the bloodiest execution was the one that took place on May 1st, 1944, in retaliation for the action of the ELAS resistance organisation; two hundred political prisoners were executed that day. Since 1984, actions for the restoration and transformation of the site into a park of remembrance and recreation began. Visitors today can see two large vertical columns in front of the wall of the shooting gallery where the resistance fighters were lined up to be executed, as well as twelve horizontal black granite columns engraved with the names of the victims.
