Konstantinos Oikonomos o Ex Oikonomon

The sculpture first adorned the square of the Great School of the Nation in 1992, when it was named after Konstantinos Oikonomos, who was a teacher at the School in Istanbul. The creator of the brass bust was the sculptor Theodoros Papagiannis, born in Elliniko of Ioannina and active Director of the First Sculpture Workshop of the Athens School of Fine Arts. Konstantinos Oikonomos (1780-1857), from Tsaritsani in Thessaly, was a Greek scholar, writer, poet and preacher. Konstantinos Oikonomos is depicted in Orthodox priestly attire, with a thick and long beard and a cross and two medals hanging around his neck. The bust is placed on a marble pedestal, on the front of which is inscribed: “Konstantinos Oikonomos o Ex Oikonomon 1780-1857”. On the left side of the pedestal is inscribed: “The Great Teacher of the Nation was born in the historical Tsaritsani of Thessaly. The statue was set up at the expense of the Athens Association of People from Tsaritsani”.
