Memorial of the American Legion

The obelisk-shaped stele was erected as part of the celebration of the national centenary, on the initiative of the American Legion in Greece. It was created thanks to a nationwide fundraiser by the Greek sculptor Georgios Dimitriadis, invoking the “Athenian”, a pupil of Georgios Vroutos. On each side of the monument is a medal with an embossed cross-sectional profile of an American citizen, a supporter of the struggle for Greek freedom. On the front, there is the medal with the cross-sectional profile of Samuel Gridley Howe (1801-1876), Chief Medical Officer of the Greek Fleet. The left side bears the figure of Daniel Webster, an American lawyer, philhellene and attorney for Massachusetts and New Hampshire. On the back, there is the figure of Edward Everett, politician, classical philologist, orator and philhellene. Finally, on the right side is the cross-sectional profile of Henry Clay, an American philhellene, orator, and politician, who served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and Secretary of State.
