Memorial to Dourgouti Blockade

The monument was erected in memory of the violent events that took place in the district of Dourgouti in Neos Kosmos on August 9th, 1944. The German occupation forces carried out a blockade at dawn. They surrounded the neighbourhood and gathered all the male population. After extensive torture and interrogations regarding the residents participation in the resistance, 120 people were executed on the spot, about 600 were taken to the camp of Chaidari, and many houses were looted and torched. The simple monument consists of a stone base, on which rests a small marble memorial stele. The engraved inscription reads: “Dourgouti Blockade, August 9th, 1944. Honour and Glory to the Fallen Fighters of the Greek Resistance 1941-1944”.
