On July 31st, 1920, on the occasion of the attempted assassination of Eleftherios Venizelos, his influential political opponent, diplomat and key figure of the Macedonian Struggle, Ion Dragoumis, was arrested by paramilitaries and brutally murdered. In 1921, one year after Dragoumis' assassination on July 31st, 1920, the urban planner and architect Aristotelis Zachos created the monument to commemorate the event. The four-metre high marble stele with the embedded cross bears engraved references to the birth and death of the honoured person, as well as verses from the funeral poem composed in his memory by the renowned poet Kostis Palamas: “Let a white pillar stand where you fell (How you fell, no scripture says); a white pillare, with the image of your Country. Only she is fit to weep for you, silent, frozen, weeping for you”.
