Monument to Karl Müller

The artwork of the lithographer Iakovos (Giakoumis) Malakates from Tinos is dedicated to the German Karl Otfried Müller (1797-1840), who was a German scholar, poet, classicist and great philhellene, as well as the pioneer of the modern study of Greek mythology. He died in Athens in 1840 and his wish was to be buried in Kolonos, so that his grave would have a view of Plato's Academy. His funerary monument is indeed located on the hill of Kolonos, next to that of the French archaeologist Charles Lenormant. The gravestone of Müller's tomb bears an antiquated anthem and was designed by Christian Hansen. The following inscription is engraved on it: “Karl Otfried Müller, born in Brieg of Silesia the year 1797 and died in Athens the year 1840, July 10”.
