This stele was erected in memory of the Greek Army officer Pavlos Melas (1870- 1904), who lead groups of Greek armed fighters and emerged as the most important leading figure of the Macedonian Struggle (1893-1908). The stele was commissioned to the sculptor Lazaros Sochos (1862-1911) a year before his death. The front of the stele bears a personification of Macedonia holding laurel branches in her right hand and, in her left hand, a medal depicting the heroic Macedonian fighter. The medal is supported by an eagle, while on the top of the stele is the phrase “Defend your country” in Greek.
