The cenotaph of the members of the Sacred Band of Alexandros Ypsilantis (1792- 1828) that fell in the battle of Dragatsani (1821) is the first public monument in Athens. It is a marble stele resting on a pedestal. The front bears the relief of a sword and a wreath and the back bears the symbol of the Sacred Band, a skull with crossed bones. The stele is crowned by a helmet. It was sponsored by the poet Alexandros K. Soutsos (1803-1863), in honour of his brother, Dimitrios, who fell at Dragatsani. The monument was designed by the architect who was also the first urban planner of Athens, Stamatis Kleanthis (1802-1862), but the sculptor remains unknown to this day.
