Mother

In 1955 the sculptor Theodoros Kolokotronis, a graduate of the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA) and a student of Konstantinos Dimitriadis, created this sculpture; it was installed in Elenas Venizelou Square, opposite the first maternity hospital in Greece, dedicated to the concept of motherhood and the archetype of the mother. It is a marble composition of three persons. The first and central one is a woman / a mother, who is depicted seated. The second is an infant, lying in its mother's arms and breastfeeding, while the third is a young boy, kneeling on his knees with his hands resting on his mother's legs, watching the breastfeeding scene. The nursing woman's gaze is turned towards the infant and the composition radiates warmth and unity among all the depicted family members. The following quote of the ancient Greek tragic poet Euripides is engraved on the pedestal: “Love your mother, children; there's no love anywhere that could be sweeter than this”, in Ancient Greek.
