National Resistance Memorial

In 1988, the Municipality of Athens, in the context of the highlighting of the National Resistance, took the initiative to honour the fallen resistance fighters of the EPON, who, after being surrounded by German military forces during the Occupation, were arrested, driven near the bridge of Ilisos and executed for their actions on the evening of August 28th, 1944. At the Perivolaki Ethnikis Antistasis Park in Koukaki, visitors can spot the simple slate monument. This memorial stele, resting on a stone base and surrounded by vegetation, bears engraved representations which depict the scene of the violent execution, and the date and the names of the fallen are also inscribed. After the memorial was installed, the cemetery was renamed “Perivolaki Ethnikis Antistasis” in memory of the event and in honour of the victims.
