The work was commissioned in 1869 by the Rectorate of the University of Athens to the sculptor Georgios Fytalis, born in Isternia of Tinos and professor of the National Technical University of Athens. The statue is located at the Propylaea of the University, opposite the statue of Rigas Velestinlis. Patriarch Gregory V (1745/1746-1821), born in Dimitsana under the worldly name George Angelopoulos, is depicted in an upright posture holding his brass pastoral staff, with his right hand extended forward. At his feet lies the rope used for his hanging by the Ottomans at the central gate of the Patriarchate. The Greek Orthodox Church declared him a saint and his memory is commemorated on April 10th every year. The sculptor's signature is missing from the monument.
